Description

A map for my ongoing Nordic counterfactual history.

This is my first topographical map, so there are bound to be some mistakes here and there. My apologises to those with a close relationship with a 1:1 correct representation of the highlands, but it was a hassle to match the various maps together.

Done in illustrator, coat of arms taken from wappenwiki.

Thoughts, comments and criticism are most welcome!

Between Rose and Thistle

After the death of James IV at Flodden, his wife Margaret Tudor is appointed regent of his young sons James and Alexander. However, Margaret enrages the pro-French faction by favouring an alliance with her brother Henry VIII. When she married Archibald Douglas, the 6th Earl of Angus in secret, she forfeited her position as regent (her late husband's will stipulating that she only keep the position as long as she remain a widow).

Consequently, Margaret is deposed by the Scottish privy council. In her place John Stewart, duke of Albany and cousin of James IV, is recalled from France to serve as Governor and Protector of the Realm. In the ensuing power struggle, Margaret flees south to the court of Henry VIII with her oldest son James in tow. However, her second son the infant Alexander, Duke of Ross, is captured by forces loyal to Albany.

With Margaret and James in London, the privy council declares James V deposed and hails the duke of Ross as Alexander IV, with Albany as his regent.

Fearful of an English army coming North to restore James V to the Scottish throne, John Stewart goes through with the historically correct plans of restoring the Orkney and Shetland Isles to Danish control in exchange for monetary and possibly military support. Christian II of Denmark, recently wed to Isabella of Austria-Burgundy and annoyed by English incursions on Iceland, is happy to oblige.
